  • It's no secret that the fashion pack have a slight preference for operating in that somewhat grey area between black and white, but with the arrival of Sander Lak on the fashion scene all greyscale style bets were promptly put on the back-burner as his spirited collection came down the runway, making megawatt colour not only acceptable, but so downright ineluctable that over the past few seasons Sies Marjan has swiftly gone from unknown to the cool-girl label on every style hunters radar. Despite his newbie status, creative director Sander Lak has been designing in the background for years, after graduating from Central Saint Martins, the Dutch designer built up an impressive curriculum vitae working for Marc Jacobs, Phillip Lim and Christophe Decarnin at Balmain, before fine-tuning his métier as head of design at Dries van Noten. Headhunted by financier Howard Marks and his wife Nancy, to takeover the atelier previously occupied by the Chado Ralph Rucci collection and create a new luxury fashion label from scratch, he moved to New York and launched Sies Marjan — a combination of both his parents given names. With his unique blend of modern elegance and streetwise sensibility, Sander Lak has managed to carve out a clear-cut aesthetic that meanders between fantasy and the familiar, with a foothold that is firmly grounded in the here and now. Indeed, with its playful mashup of textures, riotous use of colour, modern silhouettes, and a style that walks the line of butter-wouldn't-melt sweetness and maverick rebel, Sies Marjan offers a compellingly fresh take on contemporary dressing that ranges from hyper-feminine silk-satin skirts and dresses in saccharine shades of bubblegum pink canary yellow and pastel hues as sweet as macarons, to prettily twisted knitted sweaters, pretty fabulous Mary-Jane pumps, and shearling biker jackets with an urban undertone. This is fashion, live, in living colour.
