Melding the cultural influences of an east meets west aesthetic with the grand traditions of haute couture, Huishan Zhang creates ultra-feminine designs with a distinctly modern edge. Known for his sophisticated take on dressing up, this season the designer explored the heuristic question of how to look fabulous without being unnecessarily fussy. Drawing on the spirit of the swinging sixties, Zhang sought to expand upon his repertoire of pretty frocks with a lineup that included an array of easy to wear, yet elegant pieces that were designed to serve the demands and practicalities of building a functional wardrobe. With a nod to the Resort seasons beginnings as an intermediary collection catered toward the international jetset, there was an emphasis on workable — albeit elevated — separates which could be worn just as easily on a business trip as a summer soirée. In amongst the dreamy floral-appliqué gowns and modish pearl-embellished minidresses, there were voluptuous knitted peplum tops, broderie anglaise bustiers, and neat reversible bomber jackets that proved even the prettiest clothes can be practical.
